Urban League of Palm Beach County 17th Annual Food Drive

Every year, on the third Thursday of November America, celebrates Thanksgiving. On this day, we give thanks for all that we have. We celebrate with friends and family over delicious food.

We recognize the first Thanksgiving that occurred in 1621 when the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast. However, Thanksgiving wasn’t an official holiday until 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln declared it as such. He said Thanksgiving was to be celebrated every year in November.CityPlace

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday, but unfortunately, many people cannot afford to make Thanksgiving special. That is why the Urban League of Palm Beach County is having their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive to help provide food for families in need.

This is the 17th year that the Urban League of Palm Beach County is holding a Thanksgiving Food Drive, and you can help contribute! They are accepting donations of non-perishable food items or monetary donations through Thursday, November 15th before 5 pm. CityPlace will serve as a drop-off location until November 15th allowing you to bring your food items straight to us.

The Urban League of Palm Beach County’s goal with the Thanksgiving Food Drive is to raise $15,000 to provide 800 turkeys and 800 food boxes to families in need. If you can spare any money or non-perishable food items, they will go to a great cause. You can learn more about this event here.

Other Ways to Give Back to the Community

Yoga CityPlace

Being part of a community means supporting each other. The Urban League Thanksgiving Food Drive is just one way you can give back to your community of West Palm Beach. There are also many other ways to give back. CityPlace often hosts events that support great causes. Check out a few of those events below.

  • Yoga Glow in Support of Food for Families – Another opportunity to support a food drive comes with the Yoga Glow Canned Food Drive at CityPlace. This event is a chance to get active and give back at the same time. Jennifer Martin will be leading a 75-minute vinyasa yoga class. This yoga class will support Food for Families. This event is taking place on November 15th, with the yoga class from 7 pm to 8:15 pm, however, check-in will begin at 6:30 pm. Entrance to this event is free if you bring five non-perishable food items to donate, but attendance is limited, so you will want to show up early. The Food for Families food drive is being organized by WPTV NewsChannel 5, and their goal is to help those in need for Thanksgiving.
  • Zumba for PeruKidz – Another event where you can work out for a good cause is Zumba for PeruKidz. During this event, you can take a Zumba class which will raise money for a non-profit organization called Bringing Hope. Bringing Hope raises money to provide meals, housing, and other needs of poor and disadvantaged children and families in Peru. If you would like to participate in the Zumba for PeruKidz event, it will be happening on December 8th from 9 am to 11:30 am. Last year, this event raised money for over 900 children in Peru to get a meal and a Christmas present. This year, they are hoping to help even more people.
